Senator Magnus Abe, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate for governor in Rivers State, narrowly escaped death when some thugs attacked his campaign train.
According to reports, Abe and his supporters were ambushed by armed men thought to be political thugs while en route to Mbiama in the Ahoada West Local Government of the state.
The campaign train was reportedly blocked from entering the area by the gunmen using vehicles when they reportedly appeared out of nowhere at Akinima, also in Ahoada West LGA, after which the criminals began firing randomly, despite the efforts of the security personnel attached to Abe to control the situation. You know we went to Ahoada West today, an eyewitness said.
….At some point near Akinima, a group of heavily armed youths stopped us as we were traveling to Mbiama, the location of the border between the states of Rivers and Bayelsa. Before you knew it, they began firing, and the majority of us ran for cover.
Abe responded to the incident by saying, “We went there and they went and used two vehicles to block the road so that we could not get there.
Nigeria is a democracy, so everyone has the freedom to go to the people and express their ideas.
….When contacted, Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the state police command, pledged to inquire with the concerned police division and reply.
