Man Bags 6 Months Imprisonment For Cheating
,,,,,A man named Bege Mato, aged 30, has been sentenced to six months in a correctional facility by an Upper Customary Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, for the crime of cheating.
Residing within the Kamuru area of Kaduna, the defendant faced charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
According to Police Prosecutor Insp Esther Bishen, the complainant, Julius Jonah, reported the incident to the Kafanchan Divisional Police station on July 25.
,,,,,The prosecutor explained that the complainant, living in Bakin Kogi, allegedly paid the defendant the sum of N795,000 for the supply of ginger. It was alleged that while the defendant only delivered ginger worth N535,000, he pocketed the remaining N260,000 for his own use.
Bishen stated that these actions contravened sections 296 and 306 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
During the proceedings, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charges and appealed for leniency from the court.
……Presiding Judge George Gwani subsequently handed down a three-month prison sentence to the defendant for the first count. However, he offered an alternative for the defendant to pay a fine of N15,000.
For the second count, Gwani imposed a six-month prison sentence, with the option of paying a fine of N25,000.
,,,,,,,Both sentences are to be served concurrently, the judge ruled. Additionally, the judge ordered the defendant to compensate the complainant with N260,000.
