University lecturer arrested for allegedlly assaulting a minor

A lecturer at Kwara State University, Malete, Pelumi Adewole, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, on charges of sexually assaulting a student.

Adewole, who was arrested by the State Intelligence Service on charges of aggravated assault, assault and corruption among others.

The offenses, according to the plaintiffs, contravene sections 397 and 95 of the Penal Code and section 3 (320) of the Prohibited Examination Act Cap. Federal E15 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 and a jurisdiction under this Act.
The Kwara State International Women Lawyers Association (FIDA) was also involved.

Adewole, according to FIDA President Grace Okoduwa, will be married in June 2021.

The first police report said a petition dated October 15, 2021, was written by a student of the Department of Sanitation and Services KWASU, who complained of abuse by the teacher.

The student, according to police, alleged that sometime in September 2021, Adewole called her and threatened to tell her the next test if she refused to have sex with him.
As a result of the threats made by the accused, the police allegedly ordered the student who played with him to get evidence.
“The teacher then admitted the student to his dormitory at about 8:30 pm on Taoheed Street, Basin, Ilorin, where he handed her a new QWASU questionnaire and re-written test and promised to meet her. with it until dawn. .

“However, SIB security officers have arrested the suspect in the operation, who is hiding somewhere,” FIR said.
The teacher denied the allegations.
Prosecutor Nasiru Yusuf has asked the court to remand Adewole in custody, saying the charges against him do not apply to bail.
He pointed out that bullying and harassment was rampant in the country’s higher education institutions.


But the defense attorney, A.J. Opalekunde, however, asked the court to grant bail to the defendant in a lenient manner, saying the accused was still innocent until the court found him guilty.
The judge, Ibrahim Mohammed, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200,000 with the same amount of bail.
The hearing was adjourned until December 8, 2021 for further mention.
