Four feared dead as gunmen open fire at popular market
Gunmen opened fire on Tuesday night at the Anara market in the local government area of Isiala Mbano, Imo state, killing four people.
While three people died instantly, another person who was rushed to hospital later died.
Eyewitnesses told reporters on Wednesday morning that the thugs were operating in a white Sienna vehicle. Upon arrival, the suspects opened fire on a place where a woman was selling cooked meals, a distraught eyewitness told our correspondent.
One of the eyewitnesses who is a native of the community said “they didn’t even come down. They just opened fire in the direction and continued to fire as they passed. It is very unimaginable.
No one knows the reason for the murder. This has never happened here before. One of the victims is a biker who has come to eat. It is sad. You can see this whole place is deserted. Many people fled. ”
Another eyewitness told our correspondent that the bodies of three of the deceased were immediately evacuated on Wednesday morning.
Our correspondent also saw a team of cracked police officers at the scene of the crime.
When contacted, state police spokesperson Micheal Abattam said state police commissioner Rabiu Hussaini had ordered an investigation into the killings.
